Compliance Status
Compliance Status
Where Coinwaka actually stands on regulation in Kenya, stated plainly. We are preparing for compliance under Kenya’s VASP framework and we do not claim a licence we do not hold.
Coinwaka does not claim to be licensed by CBK or CMA unless such a licence is granted. This page reflects our current status and is updated as it changes.
01
Who operates Coinwaka
Coinwaka is a product operated by Chainwaka Technologies, Business No. BN-OVS6J37W, a business registered in Kenya. We are a Kenya-first crypto payments and wallet platform, currently in controlled beta.
We publish this page because trust starts with being clear about who we are and exactly where we stand on regulation. We would rather under-claim and be accurate than over-claim and mislead you.
02
Company registration
Chainwaka Technologies, Business No. BN-OVS6J37W, is a business name registered in Kenya under the Registration of Business Names Act on 22 April 2026.
A business name registration is a business registration. It is not, by itself, a virtual-asset-service licence.
03
Preparing for compliance under Kenya’s VASP framework
Coinwaka is preparing for compliance under Kenya’s Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASP) framework. Kenya’s VASP law provides that a person should not carry on, or hold itself out as carrying on, virtual-asset services in or from Kenya unless licensed under that framework.
We take that seriously. We are aligning our controls, disclosures, and operations with that framework as it is implemented, and engaging with the relevant authorities.
04
What we do NOT claim
To be completely clear:
- Coinwaka does not claim to be licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) unless and until such a licence is granted.
- Coinwaka does not claim to be licensed by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) unless and until such a licence is granted.
- Coinwaka does not promise guaranteed returns, fixed yields, or risk-free investing.
- Coinwaka does not describe itself as an institutional-grade or globally-licensed exchange.
05
How we operate during beta
While we are in controlled beta and preparing for compliance, we operate with deliberate, user-protective controls:
- User limits that scale with verification level.
- Know-Your-Customer (KYC) identity checks.
- Transaction monitoring and sanctions screening.
- Manual review of withdrawals, with most processed within 24 hours.
- Crypto held in your own wallet under a Model B design, with no custodied fiat balances.
06
How this will change
Our regulatory status will evolve as the VASP framework is implemented and as our applications progress. We will update this page to reflect our actual status at each stage. If a licence is granted, we will say so here precisely, with the details.
